The body of work from which these scans were made is an example of a mechanically printed portfolio. Sammallahti is a benchmark figure in contemporary Finnish photography and an innovative developer of printing techniques. The connection with his work came through Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen. He helped on the development of her book, Writing in the Sand (2000, Dewi Lewis).
