Aftermath: Foot and Mouth in Tow Law

on the Hedleyhope burn, near Cornsay Colliery Village. Local residents claimed that the burn had almost run dry since the construction of the Tow Law Burial site, something which had never happened before, even during the 1976 drought. It was also claimed that the water flow would suddenly surge, leaving behind chemical residues. Tests were taken by the Environmental Agency and by an independent biologist from Sunderland University. Initial results indicated that there had been no detrimental effect on the micro diversity of life in the burns running off the burial site fell.
