Burma: Darkness in the Golden Land

Dean Chapman (Photographer)

Women on bus

Young women riding on a city bus, Rangoon.
For decades, vehicles in Burma had been driven on the left-hand side of the road, a legacy of British colonisation, but in the mid-1970s Burma’s tyrannical dictator General Ne Win decided overnight that all traffic be driven on the right hand side. Challenged by an apparent rightist threat, the highly superstitious General was advised by his fortune-tellers to neutralise the political threat by ordering the switch.
