Dream Series by Martin Weber
11th July 2000 to 3rd September 2000
As part of its collaborative pre-opening programme, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, will be working with the Side Gallery on an exhibition by the young, but already internationally recognised Argentinean photographer Martín Weber. This project marks the first step in a creative dialogue between BALTIC and Side.
This exhibition is a selection from Martin Weber's "Dream Series" of beautiful black and white photographs of his native Latin Americans, which also incorporate text. Chalked blackboards contain words representing the dreams and aspirations of the people in the photographs, ranging from a desire to be "the best" or "a football coach" to simply displaying the word "love".
The work seeks to explore the field of human desires by inviting people to imagine situations such as a birthday wish and posing the question 'what do you want to be when you grow up?' It is these private wishes that, according to Martín Weber, provide a bridge for people to reveal themselves: "Our destiny may only be changed if we allow ourselves to imagine a destiny different from that which we are given."
Previously shown at the biennials in Havana and Istanbul and extensively in Europe, Weber has recently exhibited new works at The Project Gallery in New York.
