Graciela Iturbide

Photographed in the 1980s, an exploration of the matriarchal society of a pueblo in Oaxaca, Mexico, where diverse sexualities are accepted and encouraged.

Iturbide invited Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and other members of Amber to Mexico when she organised an exhibition of Konttinen’s Byker work. Side Gallery then invited Iturbide to Newcastle to show this work in 1987: photography that falls within the documentary tradition but extends it into the arena of the constructed image, sometimes bordering on surrealism. She showed the work alongside the historical exhibition Women in the Mexican Revolution, which she also brought to Side. While in NE England she produced Belmont Day Out, which has also been called A Mexican on Tyneside.
