Mosquito Coast by Sophia Evans
Saturday 4 September - Sunday 17 October 2004
It was a journey about memories, but also about discovery. I always travelled alone and relied totally on human kindness and chance meetings. It took on a life of its own.
Sophia Evans grew up in Nicaragua, where her father was a forestry advisor until the Sandinista revolution of 1979. She visited the Mosquito Coast a number of times as her father looked for seeds. As a student, she returned in 1989. This new exploration of its isolated Miskito communities is bound up with a sense of childhood magic, but it is also about opening the story of a people mentioned as refugees in the Sandinista-Contra war, then forgotten.
