River: Documenting the Tyne

Friday 24 June to Sunday 7 August 2005
Exploring the industrial reaches of the Tyne this exhibition brings together some of the wonderful images produced, commissioned and collected by Amber since the film and photography group came to Newcastle's Quayside in 1969.

Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and Graham Smith both documented the river extensively in the 1970s. South Shields artist Laurie Wheatley brought his work from the 1930s and looked at the way Tyneside was changing. There was Tish Murtha's stunning 1979 portrait of youth unemployment in her native Elswick; Nick Hedges' Fishing Industry; Bruce Rae's Shipbuilding on the Tyne; Isabella Jedrzejczyk's Urban Landscapes; the work of Chris Killip. From his 1986 look at Derwenthaugh Cokeworks to his current work with South Shields' Yemeni community, Peter Fryer's runs through the exhibition.

And there's the historical work: Jimmy Forsyth, Edgar Lee, Bill Brandt, Cleet, Parry and the anonymous photographer who so brilliantly captured The Building of the Tyne Bridge. River navigates its way to the sea by means of great photographs.
