River Project
Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen (Photographer)
Text drawn from Side Gallery archive sources:
These photographs come from Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s engagement with the film making activities of Amber, during the 1970s. The River Project was an Amber undertaking, involving photography, writing, painting and film making by a number of artists. Sirkka’s images of the coal staithes on the Tyne were part of this. Her photographs of ships being built at Wallsend were taken in relation to Amber’s production of Launch (1973), the specific film that formed part of The River Project. The photograph of the miner at High Row, at the top of the South Tyne valley, was taken in relation to the production of Amber’s High Row (1974), which documented work at a drift mine.
Note: The Amber publication, The River Project is out of print. Launch and High Row are both available from the Amber website.
