Scotswood Road

I find these photographs fascinating. I was born in Cambridge street in 1957 but the family moved away in 1959 so i have no memory of the place, how it looked, or how it felt. Looking at these images is like looking at a complete ( other time ) nothing like the world we live in today.

Scotswood Road

I lived at 49 Brunel Terrace from 1946 to 1948 when my family moved to Hartlepool. I found these photgraphs absolutely fascinating and can still recall many childhood memories of living in the area, and my father working at Armstrongs on Scotswood Road.

Scotswood Road

I lived in Shumac St (my Dad worked at Richardson's leather Works) until about 1956. Attended St Michael's Schoo infant and junior. So many of the photographs show streets that were on my journey to and from school.

Interesting to see the collection and the memories they bring back are good. I didn't have any thoughts that we were living in a slum clearance area or any sense of deprivation - no bathroom and outside loo - everyone else had the same, were content and, at least to my recollection, happy.

Shumac Street

I am trying to find out more about Shumac Street and 'Shumac Viallge' as I believe it was known. I can't find it on any maps, and can only find photos of Water Street/Penn and Railway Tce. My Grandmother was born in shumac Street and her mother worked at the leather works, and father at the Glue factory. The family later moved to the "posh" fenham.

And I too just love Jimmy's photogrpahy. I do a bit of the same and try to capture street scenes - but you end up getting funny looks; maybe Jimmy got a few in the 60's also.
