Surviving on Darlington's Shop Floors
Richard Grassick (Photographer)
The more modern of Darlington’s large factories - Cummins, Torrington, Magnet Joinery - have organised the often complex process of production into a series of simple stages. In this way, machines can be designed to perform a few simple operations over and over again. Engineering factories have used these machines widely for decades now, and the people who man them, the machinists, are an accepted breed of worker in the industry. The machining process may be highly precise, but the machinist’s work is dull and repetitive.
