Weegee Print Sales
Amber holds one of the largest Weegee collections in the world. The original Weegee photographs offered for sale here are all silver gelatin and printed on 10" x 8" paper. Prices range from £1,000 (GBP). The income from these sales will support Amber's film & photography archive, which receives no revenue funding. For further details contact Side Gallery.
These fine quality prints were all made from Weegee's original negatives, ca 1979/80, by the renowned New York master printer Sid Kaplan, at the request of Weegee's widow Wilma Wilcox, for the book Weegee's New York (Schirmer, 1982). Some of them do not appear in the final publication. A number of them featured in Weegee's own books, Naked City (1945), Weegee's People (1946) and Naked Hollywood (1953), as well as in other books of his work.
Sid Kaplan also made the sets of prints for The Weegee Portfolio. For more on his relationship with Weegee and the work read the interview with him that was developed for Side Gallery's 2008 exhibition of The Weegee Portfolio.
Amber and Weegee
In 1981 Side Gallery organised the first tour of Weegee's work in the UK. In the process Amber began a relationship with Wilma Wilcox and Sid Kaplan. Both visited Amber in Newcastle. For a number of years Amber acted as Wilma's European agent for Weegee sales.
Amber's Murray Martin visited New York on a number of occasions, helping Wilma in the difficult dissolution of The Weegee Portfolio Inc, in her responsibilities as custodian of the Weegee archive and, eventually, in drawing up the will that left the bulk of it to the International Center of Photography. Herself a photographer and a social activist, Wilma strongly supported the work of the Amber collective and its approach to film and photography. Before she died in the early 1990s she gave Amber all the prints it then held, to be used to support the group in its work and to promote Weegee's reputation.
A number of Weegee posters are also available from Amber's Online Shop, price £5 + p&p. Copies of the publication produced for Side Gallery's original touring exhibition are also available, price £5 + p&p.
