Women & War by Jenny Matthews
Saturday 30 August to Sunday 12 October 2003
My darkroom is full of spirits. There are joyous moments frozen in the dark too - war brings out the best as well as the worst... As bearers of life, women usually have a much more emotional relationship to conflict... but war and peace do not divide neatly on gender lines. Although women are more often innocent victims and peace groups from Northern Ireland to Israel and Serbia tend to be dominated by women, they can kill too, and viciously, as seen in the genocide in Rwanda. Jenny Matthews
This powerful exhibition, opening up across both floors of the gallery, looks at the experience of mothers, widows, refugees and survivors, carers, combatants and campaigners. Deep and wide ranging, it is both an exploration and a personal diary drawn from Jenny Matthews' coverage of most of the major conflicts of the last 20 years.
