So what’s Visual Culture?

Completely new to the website is our Visual Culture section. In the early 70s Amber set up an Educational Slide Library as a business. Original photography and copied imagery, it’s an eccentric collection of over 400 24 slide sets – Art and Illustration, Advertising, The Built Environment, Design and Popular Cultures – and it hasn’t been seen since the 1980s, when the business was abandoned.

home-visualculture-01 Some of the sets reflect interests Amber’s members pursued in their own work – Working Class Terraced Housing, Modern Urban Housing, Fairground Arts and more. Some just revel in Victorian or C20th imagery, from extraordinary children’s book illustration to fashion, to the covers of pulp magazines… or C19th toilet designs or advertising cards or Modern Brickwork (1910) or Wire and its Uses (1902).

The hours you can now spend on Amber-online, discovering beautiful things you didn’t know you needed to know about…
