Kronheim Colour Printing

A selection of illustrations from Victorian children’s books; POLL PARROT PICTURE BOOK, Routledge, London c 1870; THE HENNY-PENNY PICTURE BOOK, Routledge, c 1870; and from MY MOTHER’S PICTURE BOOK, Routledge, c 1870. Superb examples of the famous Kronheim colour printing.

J.M. Kronheim (1810-1896) was born in Magdeburg and came to London in 1846. Kronheim colour plates after 1850 are either Kronheim’s version of the Baxter process (of which he was a licensee) – printing by letterpress blocks printed on top of an intaglio base plate – or straightforward letterpress from wood or metal blocks.
