Byker

By: gavin lockey - 29th April 2009 (at 2:55PM)

I grew up in Janet Street and was just a little lad when Sirkka was snapping away at the neighbours. Every time I see her pictures they take me back to those days. Your description of the working class community was spot on. I can never lose my class as it lies in my gut! Thanks Ms Konttinen. Sorry I never met you, I heard a lot of kind things about you at the time. The people of old Byker will always remember you fondly.

Byker Revisited

By: Graeme Rigby - 30th April 2009 (at 10:43AM)

Thanks for this - Sirkka has been back in Byker, developing a new portrait and landscape project, Byker Revisited, which we will be showing at Side Gallery in September / October 2009. We're releasing a new film about the work at the same time and Northumbria University Press is publishing the book. All will include the original work as well as the new.
