Consett

Tommy Harris

Photographs of the County Durham steel town, taken by a local newspaper photographer from 1949 to 1979. They were acquired as part of Julian Germain’s Steel Works project

Tommy Harris worked as the photographer for two local newspapers and the Consett Iron Company magazine, as well as holding down a full time job at the steelworks. His pictures, mostly depict local events such as leek shows and prize givings. He worked in square format, knowing that they would mostly be cropped by the publications that used them. In many cases the chance elements captured at the edges of his photographs are what make his work so revealing.
