The Ashington Group I

A group of Ashington Miners were encouraged to paint about their own lives and experiences by their W.E.A. art class tutor Robert Lyon. The group first met in 1934. This selection of work was developed between then and 1983. The work was seen extensively in Europe and toured China in 1983 as the first ever tour of British artists organsised by the British Council (*with BYKER by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen).
