Byker Book Launch

Join us at Side Gallery for an evening celebrating the Northern launch of the new edition of the seminal photobook Byker by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen.

Sirkka will be available for book signing and to introduce her short film ‘Still Here’, which catches up with some of the individuals photographed by her in the 60s, 70s and 80s. 

ABOUT THE NEW BYKER BOOK

This beautifully printed new edition of Byker, published by Dewi Lewis Publishing, contains previously unseen images and stories.

Originally published in 1983 by Jonathan Cape, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s Byker is recognised as a seminal body of work and a modern photography classic. Konttinen documented a close-knit community in Newcastle in an area that was her home for seven years and destined for wholesale redevelopment. The work gained national recognition as a key photographic account of a rich working-class culture on the eve of its destruction.

1. FILM SCREENING + BOOK LAUNCH

Join us for the entire event from 6pm, grab a drink, watch the 45-minute long ‘Still Here’ film and stay for the book launch. (Restricted numbers)

2. BOOK LAUNCH ONLY

Come along after the film screening at 7pm and help us to celebrate the launch of the new Byker book. There will be an opportunity to buy a copy and have it signed by SLK. The perfect Christmas gift!
