Shields Stories (1988)

Amber Current Affairs Unit

10 ten minute ‘soap’ dramas exploring some of the social issues which were causing concern in the communities with which Amber was engaged in its 5 year North Shields residency.

Featuring the first screen appearance of Tyneside actor Robson Green, the stories follow the fortunes of seven interlinked characters as they try to make sense of their lives in a community which has suffered the effects of government policies: cuts in the health, education and social services; unemployment; lack of resources for the elderly and the lack of future promise for youth. They grew, in part, out of The Privatisation Tapes (1986) and fed into the making of the feature drama Dream On (1991).
