The Box (1986)

Amber Films

This month’s free film, The Box, is an Amber animation. It’s being shown in memory of Judy Tomlinson, who died recently. Made by her when she was a member of the Amber collective, it is very much her film. It expresses the feelings of fear and isolation felt by an elderly woman navigating the new urban environments that had increasingly replaced traditional working class communities in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

During a decade or more at Amber, Judy emanated what seemed like an inexhaustible supply of warmth, kindness and good humour. She had a wry sense of humour and you could often hear her low chuckle as you walked through the workshop. Working across the Amber operation, from gallery to continuity, set design and titling, she was always willing to lend a hand and learn new skills, but her main love was animation, to which she dedicated hours and hours, often working late into the night. Painstakingly creating hand drawn sequences with her own unique style.
